Why Drying Matters in Food and Feed Processing

Drying is a critical step in most extrusion-based production lines, whether for fish feed pellets, snack extrudates or textured protein products. Immediately after extrusion, products typically carry more moisture than is suitable for storage, and reducing this moisture to a stable level is essential for shelf life and product quality.

Beyond shelf life, proper drying affects texture and structural integrity. Under-dried product can be prone to spoilage or texture breakdown during storage and transport, while excessive or uneven drying can affect the finished product's eating or feeding quality.

Industrial dryers used in these applications are typically designed to handle a continuous flow of product from the extrusion line, with airflow and temperature settings adjusted to suit the specific product being processed.

When planning a production line, drying capacity should be matched to extrusion output to avoid creating a bottleneck at this stage - a common oversight when producers focus primarily on extruder capacity.
